ABOUT
My name is G. Gazelka, and I have been drawn to the world of words and stories for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I found solace and inspiration in literature, which eventually led me to pursue a BA in English from the University of West Florida. My passion for creative writing deepened as I earned my MFA from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, where I honed my craft and developed my unique voice.
Professional Journey
Currently, I am an English faculty member at North Hennepin Community College, Inver Hills Community College, and Minneapolis College. Teaching has been a deeply rewarding experience, allowing me to share my love for literature and writing with students from diverse backgrounds. My academic journey and teaching roles have greatly influenced my work, infusing my poetry with rich, educational undertones and a profound understanding of human experiences.
Literary Accomplishments
Over the years, my poems have found homes in esteemed literary journals such as the Paddock Review, swifts & slow, Rockvale Review, and Avalon Anthology. My chapbook, Tender One (2024), explores themes of mythological childhood, trauma, and the journey to wholeness. This collection has been particularly close to my heart, reflecting my personal meditations and truths.
I am honored to have received several accolades for my work, including an Honorable Mention in the 2023 John Rezmerski Memorial Manuscript Competition, and Honorable Mentions in both the 2022 Trans and NonBinary Award and the Keith Gann LGBTQ Award. These recognitions have affirmed my commitment to exploring and expressing the complexities of identity and experience in my writing.
Bodies in Transition
My latest release, Bodies in Transition, continues my exploration of identity and transformation. This collection delves into the fluidity of self, capturing moments of vulnerability, strength, and self-discovery. It is a heartfelt testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the beauty of change.
Personal Journey and Advocacy
As a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ and transgender communities, my work is deeply influenced by my own experiences and the stories of those around me. I strive to create a space in my poetry where readers can see themselves and feel understood. My journey has been one of constant growth and self-discovery, and I am committed to advocating for visibility and acceptance through my writing.
